Polyester is a versatile fiber. You do not only see it in textiles but it is actually everywhere around you. It is widely used to make other plastic objects. The fabrics made of polyester are also very versatile, this is also its main benefit. Fleeces to raincoats, everything is possible with polyester. However, polyester also has some disadvantages such as its characteristic that it can be quite static. The term "polyester" as a specific material most commonly refers to polyethylene terephthalate (PET), although there are many different kinds. Polyesters include synthetics through step-growth polymerization such as polycarbonate and polybutyrate, as well as naturally occurring chemicals, such as in the cutting of plant cuticles. Natural polyesters and a few synthetic ones are biodegradable, but most synthetic polyesters are not and they are therefore very durable. Cured polyesters can be sanded and polished to a high-gloss, durable finish.
